Visita de Jean Michel Dupuyoo

Hoy hemos recibido la visita de Jean Michel Dupuyoo, Director Técnico del Jardín de Pájaros Tropicales de La Londe en Francia (www.jotropico.org).

Se encontraba de viaje hacia Valencia y ha pasado la mañana con nosotros viendo las instalaciones y las especies.

La idea es que ellos van a construir unas piscinas dentro de un invernadero sin calefactar y mantener allí de momento dos especies de Aphanius, que nosotros les sugeriremos.

Una mañana muy provechosa.

III Fiesta del Fartet

Se celebró ayer 2 de junio en la R.N. del Delta del Llobregat.

Participaron 7 grupos de colegios de Viladecans, El Prat de Llobregat y Badalona. En total unos 170 escolares, con edades de 4 a 12 años.

Estuvo presente la prensa y televisiones locales.

Se liberaron unos 120 alevines de Aphanius iberus.

Acuerdo con el colegio Liceo Europa de Zaragoza

La Sociedad de Estudios Ictiológicos ha llegado a un acuerdo con el colegio Liceo Europa de Zaragoza para colaborar en el mantenimiento de especies de peces amenazadas.

 La colaboración se manifiesta en que el Colegio cede parte de las instalaciones para el mantenimiento y reproducción de varias especies de peces y la SEI realizará actividades de educación ambiental relacionadas con estos animales. Estas actividades constarán en la exhibición de las especies mantenidas, realización de charlas a los alumnos dentro de las asignaturas de Ciencias, mantenimiento y cría en el laboratorio de alevines, etc.

Las instalaciones de cría al exterior de la SEI están montadas dentro del Colegio Liceo Europa desde el inicio de la actividad de la Sociedad hace 4 años.

New season begins - Empieza la nueva temporada

Aprovechando el fin de semana estuvimos repasando las piscinas. Rellenando agua, alimentando a los peces y como sorpresa, recogiendo los primeros huevos al exterior: Aphanius persicus.

On the week end we went to do the first works of the season at the pools. Refilling water, feeding the fish and as a surprise, collecting the first eggs outdoors from Aphanius persicus.

En el invernadero ya han empezado a poner las siguientes especies: Aphanius anatoliae transgrediens, A. saourensis y A. sirhani.

We have also collected eggs in the greenhouse from Aphanius anatoliae transgrediens, A. saourensis y A. sirhani.

También separamos dos parejas, una en cada caja de 80 l, de Aphanius anatoliae splendens.

Two pairs (one in each 80 l box) from A. anatoliae splendens were isolated.

Trabajos de invierno - Winter works

Hoy Juan Pablo y yo hemos estado dando un repaso a las piscinas y preparando en el invernadero depósitos y acuarios que alojarán a ejemplares de las especies a priori más sensibles durante el invierno.

reparing some tubs and aquaria in the greenhouse to keep indoors individuals from the most cold sensitive species during the winter.

De esta forma también empezarán a reproducirse antes en primavera. Nos ha sorprendido el colorido que todavía tienen los machos de Aphanius apodus, el tamaño y la robustez de los A. anatoliae splendens, la cantidad de alevines de A. villwocki y el buen aspecto general de los Cyprinodon alvarezi.

Doing this, the fish will also start breeding earlier in Spring. We were glad to see the colour that the A. apodus male still show, the size and robustness of the A. anatoliae splendens, the amount of fry from A. villwocki and the good looks of Cyprinodon alvarezi.

SEI Poster

Debido al Congreso de la UICN celebrado entre el 4 y el 10 de octubre, se pidió a la SEI que preparara un poster sobre sus actividades.

Due to the IUCN Congress in Barcelona celebrated from Oct. the 4th to Oct. the 10th, the SEI was requested to prepare a poster about its activities.

Brian Zimmerman, de la ZSL, pidió también nuestro permiso para exhibirlo en el Congreso Internacional de Acuarios en Shangai y el Taller de Aquarios Nacionales de Reino Unido, durante los meses de octubre y noviembre de 2008.

Brian Zimmerman, from the ZSL asked our permission to display it at the Internation Aquarium Congress in Shangai and the UK National Aquarium Workshop during the months of October and November.

Proyecto Fartet - Consorcio Delta del Llobregat

En el año 2007 se inició la colaboración con el Parque Natural del Delta del Llobregat (Barcelona) con el objetivo de evaluar la población de Aphanius iberus presentes y las posibilidades de reforzar esta población.

In 2007 we started to collaborate with the Parque Natural del Delta de Llobregat (Barcelona) with the main objective of evaluating the population of Aphanius iberus that can be found there and which would be the chances to reinforce it.

Después de la obtención de los correspondientes permisos por parte del Consorci del Delta del Llobregat y la Generalitat de Cataluña, se empezaron los trabajos de prospección de puntos húmedos, educación ambiental de los niños del Colegio Público Ventós Mir de Badalona (Barcelona) y finalmente liberación de los ejemplares criados en cautividad.

After the necessary permits from the Consorci del Delta del Llobregat and the Generalitat de Catalonia were obtained, the wet spots inside the Natural Park were sampled, an environmental education project at the Ventós Mir Public School in Badalona (Barcelona) began and finally the offspring of the captive individuals were released.

Uno de los resultados por el momento ha sido la celebración de dos "Fiestas del Fartet", con la liberación de cientos de ejemplares criados por la SEI.

Trabajos al exterior - Working outdoors

Aprovechando el día de fiesta hemos estado comprobando las piscinas. Trabajos rutinarios como rellenar agua, recuento de peces, fotografías y selección de ejemplares para llevar a la convención de la Sociedad Española de Killis (SEK) y de la Sociedad Alemana de Killis (DKG).

Taking profit of a holiday we have been cheching the outdoor pools. Rutine work such as refilling, counting the fish, taking photographs and choosing fish to be taken to the conventions of the Spanish Killi Society (SEK) and the German Killi Association (DKG).

Visita y charla con estudiantes

Los alumnos de Segundo de Bachillerato del colegio Liceo Europa han visitado las piscinas y han recibido una charla sobre las especies que la SEI mantiene en las mismas, comentando cómo se manejan las piscinas, por qué esas especies, quién se encarga de su conservación... etc.

Visita a las piscinas para empezar la puesta a punto después del invierno.
We visited the pools to start the set up after the Winter.

Tanto en el invernadero como en las piscinas los peces han pasado bien el invierno. desde finales de febrero algunas especies están empezando a poner huevos.
Both in the greenhouse and the pool the fish had a good winter, no losses. Some species are laying eggs since the end of February.

En las piscinas el trabajo ha sido limpiar fondos, rellenar agua, así como colectar y separar huevos de algunas especies.

En el mes de septiembre, aprovechando sus vacaciones, Heiko y su señora visitaron España.
In Septembre, during their holidays, Heiko and his wife visited Spain.

Dado que se alojaban en el litoral de Tarragona, aprovechamos un fin de semana para ver algunos de los hábitats de Aphanius iberus y Valencia hispanica próximos: Río Llastres en L´Hospitalet de Llobregat, Santes Creus, Torrent del Pí y el delta del Ebro.
Since they were at the Tarragona coast, we met them on a week end to visit some typical habitats of Aphanius iberus and Valencia hispanica Río Llastres at L´Hospitalet de Llobregat, Santes Creus, Torrent del Pí and the Ebro.

Visita de Alain Grioche

El pasado domingo 5 de agosto nos visitó en Zaragoza Alain Grioche.

On Sunday the 5th of August, Alain Grioche visited us.

Alain es miembro del GEVA dentro de la SEI, además de pertenecer al Killi Club de France y especialmente ser un destacado miembro de la Association France Vivipare.

Alain is a member of the GEVA inside the SEI, and belongs to the Killi Club de France and is specially an outstanding member of the Association France Vivipare.

Su interés era principalmente ver la instalación de las piscinas para conocer un poco más sobre el manejo de los peces del género Aphanius en semilibertad, así como pensar si un sistema parecido sería aplicable en Francia para el mantenimiento de Goodeidos o Poecílidos al exterior durante una época del año.

His main interests were to see the pool set up to know a bit more about how to keep fish from the Aphanius genus in semiliberty, and thinking about wether a similar set up could be useful in France to keep Poecilids or Goodeids outdoors during part of the year.

El intercambio de conocimientos y peces fue muy interesante y esperamos que este tipo de visitas se repita. Quedamos pendientes de devolvérsela nosotros ahora.

The fish and knowledge exchange was very interesting and we hope to keep visiting each other in the future.

Reunión EAZA en Londres (5-6 de mayo 2007)

REUNIÓN DEL GRUPO DE ASESORAMIENTO DE CIPRINODÓNTIDOS DE LA ASOCIACIÓN EUROPEA DE ZOOS Y ACUARIOS (EAZA)

Resumen:

La Asociación Europea de Zoos y Acuarios (EAZA: http://www.eaza.net/) dispone de Grupos de Asesoramiento para diversos Taxones. Brian Zimmerman, director del Acuario del Zoo de Londres es el responsable del grupo de Ciprindóntidos incluido dentro del Grupo de peces e invertebrados acuáticos (Fish and Aquatic Invertebrates Taxon Advisory Group, FAITAG).

La presente reunión surge con varios objetivos, entre los cuales revisar los objetivos que se han cumplido desde la anterior reunión en 2004 (previa a la fundación de la SEI), así como establecer una lista de especies prioritarias de los géneros Aphanius, Valencia, Cyprinodon, Garmanella, Cualac, Megupsilon y Lucania para su conservación en cautividad.

Como resultado de la misma, la SEI es coordinadora dentro de este grupo de tres especies: Cyprinodon alvarezi, Megupsilon aporus y Aphanius saourensis.

Abstract:

The European Association of Zoo and Aquaria (EAZA: http://www.eaza.net/) has Advisory Groups for different Taxa. Brian Zimmerman, London Zoo Aquarium Leader is the responsible of the Cyprinodontids one, included in the Fish and Aquatic Invertebrates Taxon Advisory Group, FAITAG.

This meeting had several objectives, reviewing the goals that were set up during the 2004 meeting (before the SEI was founded), and establishing a list of prioritary species for captive conservation purposes within the following geni: Aphanius, Valencia, Cyprinodon, Garmanella, Cualac, Lucania and Megupsilon.

As a result of the meeting, the SEI coordinates three species inside this group: Cyprinodon alvarezi, Megupsilon aporus y Aphanius saourensis.

Recibimos estos peces hará ya siete años, gracias a Patrick de Rham, habían sido criados por Jean Paul Nourissat y con apenas 1 cm de tamaño nos hicieron una ilusión enorme. En estos momentos esperamos que se aclare su estatus taxonómico.

We received these fish about 7 years ago, thanks to Patrick de Rham. They had been bred by Jean Paul Nourissat and were just about 1 cm long. They made us very happy. We are now waiting that their taxonomic status gets clear.

Después de haberlos reproducido varias veces en acuario, dado el tamaño de la pareja (macho en la foto), se ha preparado un depósito de unos 3 m de longitud x 1,3 a 0,8 m de ancho y entre 70 y 40 cm de profundidad para ellos dentro de un invernadero.

After having bred them several times in aquarium, due to the size of the pair (the male can be seen on the pic), a tank about 3 m long, 1,3 to 0,8 m wide and 70 to 40 cm deep has been prepared this summer for them inside a greenhouse.



En el fondo varias macetas de plástico o cerámica para que elijan el lugar de puesta que quieran.

At the bottom several big plastic or ceramic flower pots should allow them to choose an adequate substrate to breed.

Actualización de las piscinas - Update from the pools

Este año, por falta de algas filamentosas hemos tenido que poner mopas de lana acrílica en las piscinas.

Para ello, más que el color, se ha seleccionado la lana más gruesa que hemos podido encontrar.

Los resultados son que un par de semanas después de poner las mopas, casi todas las especies están poniendo huevos.

Hoy se han separado bastantes huevos de A. saourensis, A. anatoliae sureyanus, A. anatoliae anatoliae y Fundulus cingulatus (puestos en un acuario de 60 l hace apenas una semana). De otras especies, por tener ya suficientes huevos o juveniles se ha optado por no recoger más huevos.

This year because there weren´t enough filamentous algae, we had to put acrylic wool mops in the pools. To select them, we just choose the one that´s thicker.

After a couple of weeks with the mops, most of the species are laying eggs.

Today we picked up eggs from A. saourensis, A. anatoliae sureyanus, A. anatoliae anatoliae and Fundulus cingulatus (which are in a 60 l since last week). From the rest of the species that already have enough fry or eggs, we decided not to collect more eggs.

Resumen:

El Grupo de Asesoramiento de Peces e Invertebrados Acuáticos (FAITAG) de la
Asociación Europea de Zoos y Acuarios (EAZA: www.eaza.net) mantuvo una reunión
los días 5 y 6 de mayo de 2007 en Londres.
A la reunión asistieron representantes de la Sociedad Zoológica de Londres (ZSL),
Tiergarten Schönnbrun (Zoo de Viena), Universidad de Viena, Asociación Alemana de
Killis (DKG), Asociación Británica de Killis (BKA) y de la Sociedad de Estudios
Ictiológicos (SEI).

Los objetivos de la misma fueron conocer la situación en cautividad y en la naturaleza
de diversas especies de los géneros Aphanius, Valencia, Cyprinodon, Cualac y Lucania
para determinar qué especies son prioritarias para realizar un esfuerzo de conservación
en cautividad.

Desde este momento, la SEI es miembro del grupo de asesoramiento del FAITAG y
coordinadora de Aphanius saourensis, Cyprinodon alvarezi y Megupsilon aporus.

Abstract:

The Fish and Aquatic Invertebrates Taxon Advisory Group (FAITAG) of the European
Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA: www.eaza.net) held a meeting in London on
May the 6th and 7th.
Representatives of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), Tiergarten Schönnbrun
(Vienna Zoo), University of Vienna, German Killifish Association (DKG), British
Killifish Association (BKA) and the Sociedad de Estudios Ictiológicos (SEI) were
present in this meeting.
The goals of the meeting were to know the current situation both in captivity and in the
wild of some species from the geni Aphanius, Valencia, Cyprinodon, Cualac and
Lucania, to determine which of them should be priorised for captive conservation
efforts.
From this moment on, the SEI is a member of the FAITAG advisory group, and
coordinates the following species: Aphanius saourensis, Cyprinodon alvarezi and
Megupsilon aporus.
